Editor's Note: The Springfield News-Leader featured the article, Former CFO president's impact felt in his passion for rural communities, on June 30, 2015. The author, Matt Lemmon, is the media director for the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.

At the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, we are very proud of our distinguished past presidents, though the list only includes two people. Jan Horton, the CFO's first employee and president until retiring in 2003, remains a vital part of the Springfield community and an unparalleled asset and ambassador for our organization.

Our second president, Dr. Gary Funk, left in 2011. Since then he's taken his passion for rural development (best illustrated during his tenure here by the establishment of the Rural Schools Partnership and growth of our regional affiliate network) and place-based learning to the national level.
