Willow Springs Elementary School first graders now have daily access to cutting edge technology thanks to a Coover Grant from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks' Rural Schools Partnership.

Coover Grant Provides Willow Springs Students with Technology Access

April 09, 2018

Last year the Community Foundation of the Ozarks' Rural Schools Partnership provided a Coover Grant of $7,475 to Willow Springs Elementary School in support of Bobby Cottengim and Chris Rodgers' Community & Business Leaders Technology Project. This effort provided an opportunity for students to work hand-in-hand with area business and community leaders in utilizing new technologies and Chromebooks to research and learn more about work and projects in the area.

Mr. Cottengim, school principal, provided us with an update of the project during the recent Ozarks Teacher Corps seminar that was held in Willow Springs.

"Students, teachers, and administration at Willow Springs Elementary are so appreciative of receiving the Coover Grant through the Community Foundation of the Ozarks, which has allowed us to purchase 30 chrome books for our five first grade classrooms.Prior to being awarded the grant, first grade students had very limited access to technology in the classroom, students had only a one hour block each week in the school’s shared computer lab.Now first grade students have daily access to technology right in their own classrooms. Teachers implement small groups for math, as well as, reading instruction and utilize the chrome books as a center that each small group will rotate through on a daily basis. While at the chrome book center students use web based applications to support, reinforce, and enrich the content for the day.In addition, students use the chrome books for our accelerated reader program (AR), benchmark assessments, and researched based projects. Thanks again for all you do to provide additional opportunities for our students."

Thanks to Mr. Bobby Cottengim, Ed.S, Elementary Principal in Willow Springs, Missouri for submitting this report.

The Coover Grant program is a flagship partner of the Rural Schools Collaborative's Grants in Place program.
