Kimball, South Dakota students promote their hometown from new heights
Using new technology, students are highlighting the assets of their rural community
These Kimball, South Dakota students have been hard at work producing promotional videos for their rural community. Thanks to Mike Knutson of Watertown, SD, an RSC Advocate. for presenting the award poster to Mr. Gillogy and his students.
In Kimball, South Dakota, students are helping their small town soar, thanks to a Rural Schools Collaborative Grants in Place project called "Growing Better Together," which is funded by our partner, Dakota Resources with matching funds from individual donors and the Rural Schools Collaborative.
At Kimball School, computer science teacher Drew Gillogly is working with his multimedia classes to make a video featuring the town and highlighting its many assets. The project, called Sharing Kimball Awareness, partners students with the Kimball Economic Development group. This year, they've been working together on a unique project promoting the town of 703, while learning about new tools and technology they can carry with them into their careers.
Mr. Gillogly's classes, along with local economic development coordinator, Anita Holan, are currently working on the production of community marketing videos. The videos are especially unique because they are using drone technology to take video of the Kimball community. Students are also interviewing local residents in an effort to share what people like about their community. The grant helped to fund the purchase of the drone and new technology for the rural school.

The 2017-18 Grants in Place program is a cooperative venture between the Rural Schools Collaborative, partner organizations and committed donors. This year's funding will support 35 projects serving as many as 45 communities in 11 states.
More than twenty funders and individual donors came together to invest $136,000 in rural place-based education initiatives and projects supporting community-based student learning that serves a public purpose.
