National Center for Frontier Communities Farm to School
Catron, Grant, Hidalgo, and Luna Counties
The US Department of Agriculture awarded $100,000 to support the National Center for Frontier Communities’ efforts to provide locally grown food to school districts in Catron, Grant, Hidalgo, and Luna counties. This includes the provision of funding to educate the students about local food.
The grant is critical support in a remote area of the country and provides a stable market for both the farmers looking to sell their products and the school districts looking to provide quality produce for their students. Even more critical is the fact that nearly all of the 8,000+ students who will benefit from this local food pipeline qualify for free or reduced school meals in a state that leads the country for childhood hunger according to Feeding America.
